Author Portrayal and Style

The style of “Ally’s Choice” is a podcast, thus, the ‘writing style’ so to speak is much different from “A More Perfect Union”. Ally’s choice draws pathos and emotion from listeners by having multiple people speak about racism, which also adds to the credibility on their part. The lady who primarily speaks seems knowledgeable for she pulls in references directly from history such as “The Trail of Tears” pertaining to the Native Americans. She also seems to pertain to pathos and emotion by saying in a sad voice that when someone looks black, black becomes “who they are”, and that it becomes what defines them as a person to most, even if they aren’t fully or even half African American. One of the women that speaks on the podcast also adds to the credibility for she had first-hand experiences growing up with oppression and racism, stating that when she went to a primarily white school, the kids would hold up signs saying “Go home Negroids” on Martin Luther King day… She lied to her classmates and told them that she was white, even ignoring her sister to be popular and “white”, which is very depressing, and by touching on this you can really see her persona coming through.

The style of “A More Perfect Union” written by Barack Obama, uses pathos to emotionally draw in his viewers/listeners. He does this in many different ways, one of which being that he quotes “We the people, in order to form a more perfect union”, then goes on to state how this large and life-changing statement was tainted and ruined by slavery and other bad decisions on America’s part. He makes himself trustworthy by promising he will help to put an end to this issue, and by also showing us that he has firsthand issues with oppression and racism, but has overcome them and wants to help others do so too. He seems very knowledgeable due to his diction and tone that he speaks/writes in, and this makes me more inclined to not only like him but believe him. I can tell that his persona is very determined, caring, and reliable.

  1. Both the podcast Ally’s Choice and President Obama’s speech “ A More Perfect Union” manage to use emotions to an advantage in making their points relevant and relatable. In Allys choice the emotions she draws upon are mostly empathy based to this family that struggles about what race or ethnicity they associate with. When one of the daughters in the podcast contradicts her mothers decision to be negro, we see the perspective of herself and how it only made high school that much more difficult for her. It is this sense that she doesn’t fit in that allows us as listeners or readers to empathize with her. We begin to try to understand the struggles internally and externally she goes through. It is important to the point of the story by keeping us interested as our imaginations begin to wander. In president Obama’s speech to America regarding his former pastors comments, he uses strong emotional language to address to America his beliefs on race. He uses words like “slaves blood” when talking about his wife and their shared heritages, and because of this strong portrayal of his race he is making a stand that he will not play ignorant to the race factor. He knows that in reality race is still a major issue and it is only when we understand this to the full extent that a change can be made. Now coming from the leader of our country this kind of stern emotion is similar to how A father would speak to his children when trying to teach or express a lesson and I believe to Obamas benefit this adds reliability to his words and allows us too understand how he will lead America in issues such as this.

  2. The podcasts Ally's Choice and President Barack Obama's speech "A More Perfect Union" use emotions to sort of make themselves relatable and to seem like they are down to earth and just like everyone else who is listening. Using emotions shows people that you are compassionate and feel what they feel everyday which leads to them liking you more. In Ally's Choice she triggers emotions by talking about the struggles that lie within the family, like race. She discusses that her struggle with race and ethnicity really made her adolescence years difficult. Using the emotion through this, many people can relate to the struggles as a child when being different and not feeling accepted among your peers. In Barack Obama's speech, he uses emotion in his language, with his word choice. He talks about being half white and half black and his wife being black and their common heritage. Obama says that he is well aware that race is still an issue and he will not ignore it and he is going to try and change it. Obama is trying to portray himself as humanly as he can for being such a public figure. He is a relatable man however because he is a father to two daughters who are black and he is married. People of his race and ethnicity can especially relate because they like to see and hear people advocating for them especially if it is their president.

  3. In the podcast and the speech, emotions are triggered to make their points more valuable. Throughout the podcast, while talking about herself and her experiences, the readers begin to feel sympathetic, or even empathetic towards her. She is treated really bad and when she explains all these things, the listeners are sure to feel sorry for her. In Barack Obama's speech, he likes to also bring up his past in order to prove his ultimate promise to make this a better country. He uses his background and experiences to make himself more likable and relateable.
